Mastering Engine Room Recordings: Doggystyle Restyled by Various Artists
Engine Room Recordings did it again, this year they found a great way to bring back a classic album to a new era of music, Rock, Singer/Songwriter, Pop, Funk and Hip Hop are some of the styles you will find in this compilation
Chris Hacker (Executive Producer/Partner of Engine Room Recordings) and Mark Christensen (Chief Mastering Engineer and Owner of ERR and Engine Room Audio) are the minds behind this album, as well the bands, artists, engineers and assistants that made this record happened. Working on records like this is always an exciting challenge from any engineering perspective.
For starters, every song was rearranged and performed by a different artist. Most of the tracking was done at Engine Room Audio by some of my colleagues and almost every track was mixed by a different engineer. In the end all you’ve got is 12 tracks that sound drastically different from each other and that need to sonically fit in one big album.
"Now this is not just another mix of wanna be rappers copying the classic songs note for note. The concept was to recruit bands that do not have a traditional hip hop sound and challenge them to record a cover version of the song that was part Snoop and part them. The result is fantastic. The Tubetops put together a spacey version of “Lodi Dodi” that uses all the new wave synth technology that they have come to be known for. The song is truly original and a very enjoyable listen. Another extreme twist is the version of “Ain’t No Fun” by Holy Folk. The stripped down version spun in a folk way breaks the lyrics down into an amazing display of talent, especially when the singer swoons “Cuz you gave me all your pussy, and you even licked my balls”. Classic! One of Snoop Doggs most popular songs “Gin And Juice” has been rerecorded a few times but this latest version by Garrison Starr is a standout. Please give the full album a listen here."
